Before you decide

Wrinkle relaxers and fillers, explained plainly

Read what these treatments are and what to ask a provider, then request a consultation when you are ready.

Injectables, in general terms

An injectable is a product placed into or under the skin with a needle or cannula. In a med spa, that usually means wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers. Products, doses and techniques differ, and so do the areas a provider will consider.

Because these are injected, rules are stricter than for a facial. Injectables are given by licensed providers where state law allows, and Utah sets who may inject and what supervision applies. A provider will also need your health history and a list of your medicines before anything is decided.

If you are curious but unsure, a consultation request is a low-pressure way to ask.

Signs a consultation is thorough

You can learn a lot from how an injectables consultation is run. A thorough one usually includes:

  • questions about your health, medicines, allergies and pregnancy
  • a clear name for the product type being discussed
  • a plain talk about possible side effects and what to do if one happens
  • a chance to ask questions without being rushed
  • written aftercare instructions
  • no pressure to decide on the spot

Injectables are given by licensed providers where state law allows. It is fine to ask who the provider is, what license they hold and who oversees them.

The days before

Some providers give instructions for the days before a consultation where treatment might happen at the same visit. Ask the office in advance. Common topics include alcohol, supplements that can raise bruising, and strong skin care on the area.

Never stop a prescribed medicine, including a blood thinner, without talking to the person who prescribed it. Arrive with a clean face if the office asks, bring your notes, and allow enough time that you do not feel hurried. You can always choose to wait and think after hearing the provider's view.

Questions about injectables

Who can give injectables in Utah?

Who may inject is set by state rules, and they differ. Depending on the rules, injectors may include physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners or registered nurses, sometimes under supervision. Injectables are always given by licensed providers where state law allows. Ask any provider what license they hold and who supervises them.

What is the difference between wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers?

Wrinkle relaxers are a purified protein injected into specific muscles, and they act on muscle movement. Dermal fillers are gels placed under the skin in chosen areas. They are different products with different techniques. A licensed provider can explain both and decide what, if anything, is suitable for you.

Can I have injectables while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Most providers do not give wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If either applies, or you are planning a pregnancy, tell the provider at the start of the consultation. They will decide what is suitable, which may mean waiting.
